Background Information

Andreas Vesalius's Family​

  • Andreas Vesalius was born on December 31, 1514, in Brussels which is part of the Holy Roman Empire

  • He was born into a wealthy family with a father named Andries van Wesele who was a personal pharmacist for Emperor Charles V

  • Vesalius had 2 brothers and a sister

Early Life in Education​

  • Andreas Vesalius went to Catholic Brothers of Common Life School for 9 years starting at age of 6

  • Vesalius learned arithmetic, Latin, and Greek at school, as well as Hebrew and other arts

  • At age 15 Vesalius went to Catholic University of Leuven to get an art degree and graduated in 1532

Medical Education​

  • Vesalius was accepted into the University of Paris, the most prestigious medical school

    • He immediately started studying at the age of 19 in 1533

    • Vesalius’s education was mostly dominated with Galen of Pergamon’s writings who had been dead for 1300 years

    • Galen’s anatomical observations at that time came from dissecting animals, so observations were not accurate

  • Johann Guinter von Andernach and Jacobus Sylvius were his instructors who translated Galen’s texts into Latin

    • They allowed Vesalius to do his own dissections 

    • Guinter was so impressed with Vesalius so he invited Vesalius to write "Institutiones anatomicae" with him

  • Vesalius received his bachelor degree in medicine at age 22

  • He got accepted into University of Padua, where he wanted to be a physician and doctor

  • Professors realised Vesalius was exceptional student and allowed him to take exams immediately

  • Vesalius got his doctorate before his 23rd birthday

  • The senior academics elected him to be professor of human anatomy and surgery

  • ​​Vesalius was inspired by his father who was a pharmacist

  • His mother encouraged him to use the big family library for studies

  • Claudius Galen's books helped drive Vesalius's eagerness of anatomy

  • Expertise in anatomy led to Vesalius participating in autopsies and gaining more knowledge of the human body

  • He dissected bones as well to further the understanding of the complete body and stole bodies from graves
